One major advantage of semi-permanent makeup is that it can last up to 3 years. Of course, retouching from time to time is essential to preserve the look and ensure you always look good.
What Is Semi-Permanent Makeup?
Semi-permanent makeup is also known as cosmetic tattooing. It is a procedure that involves placement of pigment on the skin’s outermost layer using a handheld tool with a tiny vibrating needle.
Area to be worked on is numbed with a numbing cream before this minimally invasive procedure is carried out.
Unlike permanent tattoos, the pigment is placed 0.2 mm deep into the skin and will eventually fade with time. The exact reason why it is called semi-permanent makeup.
The best use of semi-permanent makeup is to enhance:
- Eyebrows
- Eyeliner
- Lips
- Facial features
- Scalp
Who Should Consider Semi-Permanent Makeup?
You should consider Semi-permanent makeup if:
- You’re tired of your repetitive daily makeup routine and want a longer lasting solution.
- You want to cut down on your make up time and still look good.
- You are a busy executive and have an active lifestyle yet you want to maintain a polished look without worrying about smudging or reapplication.
- You are sensitive to traditional make up products.
- You want a subtle enhancement of your natural features.
- You wish to conceal the bald patches on your scalp because you are experiencing hair loss.
- You have scars or burns from surgery or an accident.
Types Of Semi-Permanent Makeup
Here are the numerous sorts of semi-permanent makeup techniques:
Microblading
Microblading is an eyebrow drawing procedure regarded as semi-permanent cosmetics.
It includes placing pigment with a small blade under the upper skin layer of the eyebrow area.
Small hair-like strokes are generated with the pigment, producing a natural look and fuller eyebrows.
People with thin eyebrows can choose microblading to thicken their eyebrows. At least two sessions are required to acquire the desired and correct outcomes.
Depending on your lifestyle and skin type, this can last up to 3 years. To make the results appear natural, the pigment color is selected based on the color of your natural hair.
Microshading
Micro shading offers your eyebrows a delicate and smooth look; consequently, it is also known as eyebrow powder.
The latest form of semi-permanent eyebrow makeup involves darkening your eyebrows with small spots of pigment around the brow area.
An electronic tattoo equipment with a sterilized needle inserts the small dots. The dots help to gradually add color and eventually create an outline that gives your eyebrows a shaded effect.
The results of micro shading might last for up to 3 years.
Pigmentation At The Micro Scale
A tattoo procedure called scalp micro pigmentation gives thinning parts of the scalp more volume and provides the appearance of hair.
This method works well for baldness, alopecia, receding hairlines, and thinning hair because it injects pigment into the scalp using tiny needles.
Additionally, you might have your scalp micro-pigmented if you are not a good candidate for a hair transplant.
Scalp micropigmentation can produce semi-permanent effects that endure for up to eight years.
The Lip Line
You can also use semi-permanent makeup to define the shape of your lips with a long-lasting lip line. In this manner, you won’t need a lip liner to define your lips frequently.
Applying Eyeliner
For women who apply eye pencils or eyeliners daily, semi-permanent eyeliner is the best option.
Depending on your desire, you can use this technique to create a gentle, natural line or a full makeup impression.
The hue of the pigment that is put along your eye line is up to you. Eyeliner that is semi-permanent doesn’t smear or disappear.
What Advantages Does Semi-Permanent Makeup Offer?
The following are some of the many advantages that semi-permanent makeup offers:
• It is a non-surgical method that aids with facial definition.
• You are not required to follow a cosmetics regimen every day.
• Achieve flawless lips, eyes, and eyebrows.
• The dye does not smear, and the effects persist for long.
• There is no risk to the skin from semi-permanent makeup.
What To Expect After Treatment
After getting semi-permanent makeup, you will feel a thin layer of scab that should not be picked. It will fall off naturally.
Once the scab falls off, you will notice that the pigment color is lighter than initially. The final color will appear once the healing phase is complete.
Recovery after semi-permanent makeup can take about 4 to 7 days.
Semi Permanent Brows
Semi-permanent makeup is experiencing a huge rebirth, partly driven by the skyrocketing popularity of microblading.
For those who recall the permanent cosmetics experiments of the ’90s and early 2000s, the outcomes were generally less than acceptable.
Unevenly fading tattoos paired with ever-changing beauty trends made committing to permanent brow tattoos a dangerous choice, leaving many trapped with obsolete styles.
Thankfully, semi-permanent makeup has altered the game, giving the right balance of long-lasting looks with less commitment.
Semi-permanent brows have swiftly become one of the most sought-after beauty treatments, particularly in locations like Nigeria.
Instead of spending time filling in your brows every morning, you may wake up to beautifully formed, defined eyebrows that match your features effortlessly.
Eyebrows are having their moment in the spotlight, a trend showing little indication of slowing down.
While waxing, HD Brows, and brow lamination have been popular alternatives, more individuals are adopting semi-permanent treatments for a finished look that lasts.
But what exactly are semi-permanent brows, and what does the treatment involve?
In this post, we’ll explore all you need to know about semi-permanent eyebrows, breaking down the numerous techniques—from microblading and micro-pigmentation to machine methods and eyebrow tattooing.
Whether you’re wondering about the method, the results, or how to choose the correct therapy, this guide will address all of your questions, plus more.
What Are Semi-Permanent Brows
Semi-permanent brows, also known as microblading or micro-pigmentation, are a cosmetic tattooing procedure aimed to enhance the appearance of eyebrows by implanting pigment into the upper layers of the skin.
This method produces the illusion of natural hairs and a well-defined shape, filling gaps and delivering a polished finish.
Unlike traditional tattoos, the pigment used in semi-permanent brows progressively fades over time, often lasting between 18 months to 3 years, depending on the pigment type and individual skin features.
Types of Semi-Permanent Brows
Here, we will describe varieties of semi-permanent brows, such as microblading, Ombré (microshading) and combo brows
Microblading

Microblading is created with a manual tool that uses tiny needles in a row. This tool is also used for hand shading.
Using this tool, you may draw brow strokes that simulate genuine hair. These strokes are applied to the epidermis, slightly touching the dermis layer of the skin.
Microblading normally lasts one to two years, depending on your skin type and skincare routine. Yearly touch-ups are suggested to maintain the look.
Microblading brows seem incredibly natural. However, it’s not suggested for oily skin types or those with an oily T-zone.
Oils in the skin might break down the pigment or worsen the visibility of the strokes.
Microblading can be slightly more invasive than other techniques, such as microshading, which we’ll discuss shortly.
For clients with oily skin, more frequent touch-ups may be needed—around every six months to a year.
Those who use strong exfoliants or anti-aging creams may also experience faster fading, as these products increase skin cell turnover.
Microshading (Powder Brows/Ombre Brows)
Microshading, on the other hand, is created using a machine rather than a manual tool. The machine creates a soft, powdery look that resembles brow makeup.
It has different forms, such as ombre brows, powder brows, or micro shading brows.
They are all pretty much the same thing, with slight variations in technique, but the same tool is used to create them.
This look is softer and natural, making it one of my favorite techniques.
Microshading allows for versatility, as it can be adjusted to create either a subtle powder brow or a denser, pencil-like brow for clients who wear heavier makeup.
Best for all skin types: Oily, dry, and mature skin clients can all benefit from microshading.
It can last longer than microblading—around two to three years, depending on your skin type and skincare routine.
The density and softness of the brow can be tailored during your consultation.
Because microshading is done with finer needles, it penetrates deeper into the skin and takes extra time. However, the results tend to last longer than microblading.
Combination Brows (Combo Brows)
Combination brows, or combo brows, are a mix of both microblading and microshading techniques.
With this technique, you can create hair strokes using the manual tool for microblading, and then add shading with the machine.
This gives the brows a dimensional, polished look, combining natural strokes with a shaded effect.
Combo brows are the most popular option, providing the best of both techniques. Clients love how the brows turn out, with the subtle look of hair strokes and the depth of shading.
Customizing Your Brow Look
All brow techniques—microblading, microshading, or combination brows—can be adjusted to look more natural or dramatic based on your preferences. We can also tweak the ink color to match your ideal look.
